021M31SECOND FOUNDING: The loyal Space Marine Legions were broken up into smaller Chapters of one thousand Marines under the guidance of Roboute Guilliman of the Ultramarines to prevent one man from wielding too much power in the Imperium. POWER ARMOR TYPES

MARK I THUNDER — The techno-barbarians of early Terra used this armor before the Emperor unified the Earth. This is the only Mark that wasn't enclosed.
MARK II CRUSADE — Used by the Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade to reunite humanity. Its overlapping hoop-shaped armor plates allowed for ease of movement, but were notoriously difficult to maintain.
MARK III IRON
MARK IV MAXIMUS
MARK V HERESY — Used by many Marines during the Horus Heresy. Its studded plates were easier to produce, but slightly less effective.
MARK VI CODEX — Used in the post-Heresy years. Most suits retained the studded shoulder guard of the Mark V type for the left pauldron. Two helmet variants existed: the beaked Corvus type and one based on experimental Terminator designs. This suit's chest armor covered the cabling that had proven a consistent weakness on many earlier types.
MARK VI CORVUS — This subtype of Codex Armor utilized the Corvus helmet.
MARK VII AQUILA — (Also: EAGLE) Most common armor type in M41. The vast majority use the Terminator-derived helmet, though the Corvus helmet still exists.
MARK VIII ERRANT — Advanced type represents the cutting edge of Imperial technology.

One of their standards hangs at the Eternity Gate for their performance in the 5th Black Crusade. Some records suggest that they may have had three successor chapters. The chapter was nearly destroyed in the Altid Crusade, and was not at full strength again till the start of M40. They covertly absorbed the remnants of the Tiger Claws chapter, one of their successors, when they emerged from their ill-fated Warp journey in late-M41. Lugft Huron led the chapter, along with several others, into rebellion during the Badab Wars in late-M41 when their strength stood at 30 companies, turning their homeworld into an impenetrable fortress. They were finally defeated in 912M41, but 200 Marines escaped, becoming the core of the Red Corsairs.

Those afflicted with the Black Rage form a special Death Company. This legion spawned the Second Founding chapters: Angels Encarmine, Angels Sanguine, Angels Vermilion, Blood Drinkers, and Flesh Tearers. They and their successor chapters use a process called Insanguination to activate the gene-seed in aspirants. They are the longest lived of all the chapters, sometimes achieving lifespans of over 1000 years. They rest, whenever possible, in the Sarcophagus utilized in their creation, which filters and purifies their blood. They are considered a codex chapter, but have the additional non-codex rank of Sanguinary Priest. They are adherents of the Cult Imperialis, believing in the Emperor's divinity and man's right to rule the stars. They were known for their fighting spirit, brutal assualts, firey tempers, and tendancy to use overwhelming force where possible. They commonly dueled with swords or red-hot irons when not on campaign. They have stocks of Mk. III armor reserved for bording actions. They fought for the Thorians in the Age of Apostasy, when most Marine chapters refused to take a side. They fought alongside the Black Templars, Imperial Fists, Soul Drinkers, and the Martian Tech Guard against Goge Vandire, and also on the loyalist side of the Badab Wars in 903M41. The chapter, aboard their fortress monastery Raptorous Rex, disappeared in a warp jump to the Crows World subsector in 963M41 and was declared lost to the warp in 983M41. Their Chapter Master was Stibor Lazaerek during the Lycanthos Drift Campaign in the 800s of M41, but fought against the Warder Chapters in the Badab War. At the begining of the Badab conflict, their fleet strength consisted of the Raptorous Rex, two battle barges, seven cruisers, and over thrity escort and tender vessels. GREY KNIGHTS — [Unknown] The Order Militant of the Inquisition's Ordo Malleus, this 666th chapter was specially created and trained for resilience against chaos and psychic foes. History records them as established in the Second Founding, the only new chapter not formed by division of the Space Marine Legions. Malcador the Sigilite selected eight Marines of unswerving loyalty from both loyalist and traitor legions as the core of the Grey Knights during the early years of Horus' rebellion and led them to their fortress monastery on Titan, where geneseed and hundreds of recruits waited. The Emperor had personally overseen creation of this untainted geneseed, and bound some of his own genes into it. Thus, all Grey Knights are psykers of varying power whose light is poison to the powers of Chaos. Malcador hid Titan in the Warp during the final years of the Horus Heresy, and it returned during the Second Founding. The record of their founding is recorded in the Iron Grimoire, which is also the only record of the great evil imprisoned beneath their monastery. They were attached to the Inquisition from their very beginnings, and remained the militant arm of the Ordo Malleus. Janus was the first Supreme Grand Master of the chapter. Their Chapter Master during the Badab War, Sartaq, was killed in the Betrayal at Grief, possibly by the hand of Lugft Huron, who had heard that Sartaq's support was waning. They were granted the Emperor's forgiveness after their siding with secessionist forces during the Bedab Wars and assigned a penitent crusade. The Preying Mantidea, who receive intricate tattoos and psycho-conditioning that allow them to activate their preomnor gland, are a special group of veterans tasked with hunting down Alpha Warriors. The preomnor implant is dysfunctional in Mantis Warriors, but those of sufficient piety can consciously activate it to enter a battle-haze from which they may never return, leaving them good only for close combat. Those who have made this change are relegated to a special group, the Mantis Religiosa
